Company Success Audit

Every organisation faces unique challenges. Nevertheless research (from Harvard Business School) shows that the most successful get five things right. [Your organisation might be a company, an agency, or even the team that you lead.]

  1.      1. Leadership And Direction

Successful organisations have a clear idea of what they are trying to be, do and achieve in the future. This is understood by all members and it is so meaningful that it actively influences the behaviour and choices that people make at all times when they are at work. Significantly, there needs to be more than just a vision – there is also a need for leadership (at every level) and direction so that there is movement towards achieving the goals. How effectively is your organisation led?

  1.      2. Performance Management

Is your organisation able and willing to value qualities (for example motivation, trust, positive attitude, communication, risk taking or risk aversion, and willingness to take a lead)? If so, has it worked out how to measure and reward such qualities as well as the quantifiable factors such as cost, speed, frequency and profit? Does it have interesting, challenging goals or are they either uninspiring or impossible? Do you have effective, practical strategies for developing individual, team and company performance in the direction you need to go (see leadership and direction above)? To achieve high levels of performance successful organisations manage these challenges at every level. How’s yours doing?

  1.      3. Customers

Any organisation needs customers! It also needs to have a clear, effective, brilliant customer focus if it is to be successful. Do you have really effective strategies to become the provider of choice, the employer of choice (yes, staff are customers too), and/or the investment of choice?

Current Rating: ___/10

  1.      4. Teamwork

Many organisations struggle because they are fractured into competing groups and have too many individuals who don’t care about what others face ... ‘as long as I’m okay’. A collaborative team-working environment is vital for the success of everyone in the agency and of the organisation itself. As well as a shared sense of purpose, teams need excellent communication & feedback, regular reviews, high levels of support & trust, clear procedures & ground rules, continuing personal growth & development of all members, excellent inter group relations, team based rewards (not just financial), and appropriate, centred leadership. How are you doing at present?

Current Rating: ___/10

  1.      5. Attitudes, Motivation

Successful organisations need their members to choose appropriate, helpful, positive attitudes. This can be helped by creating a motivational environment and by encouraging such attitudes, but at the end of the day each of us has to choose for ourselves how we think and feel about ourselves, our colleagues, our managers, our organisation, our customers, and the challenges that we face. Some insist that the glass is half full, others insist that it is half empty. How would you rate the quality of attitudes and motivation in your organisation today?

  1.     6. What Else?

Other factors which could affect future success include – (for example)

Yourself (Work/Life Balance, health), how stress is managed, systems, cash flow management, energy levels, communication, accountability, recognition, personal development, managing market forces, rules & procedures, resistance to change, technology …

It’s not enough to be working on the first 5 topics, because every enterprise or agency has unique characteristics and challenges. You also need to be looking for the specific issues that might be holding you back, or that might trip you up in the future as you develop. How well are you doing this at present?

Current Rating: ___/10

  1. Today’s Challenge: Identify your priorities for attention.

Considering the rating you have given in each of the 6 sections above, and the specific reasons that you chose for rating it that way, which one of them do you most need to focus on?

Within that area, which are the things that you really need to develop strategies for?

How and when will you generate solutions that will take you forward?

What would be your second set of priorities?

How and when will you generate solutions to that area for attention?

Repeat continuously! No organisation is ever perfect!
